A visit to Llyn Eigiau, site of the Dolgarrog Disaster

For this walk, we were fortunately able to drive up a very narrow, twisting and steep road to park close to the lake.  This meant that despite the height, we had very little climbing to do.  The down side was that the selected route meant all of our ascent was saved for the walk back to the cars at the end of the day.

With the lake receded to its pre-dammed size, the remains of the wall still stand and one of our first stopping points was in the gap opened by the water flooding through.

Our walk followed around the dam wall, crossing over Afon Porth-Llwyd and then roughly followed the course of the river taking us down to the Coedty Reservoir, before completing the loop back up to the car park.  Unusually for the group, almost all of the walk was on farm track or surfaced road, though the road was of the very remote and single tracked variety.

This little reservoir walk really is a hidden gem of Snowdonia, nestled below the much more famous Carnedd Llewelyn.  For those not so keen on climbing the bigger hills, this is a great place for some stunning views along the Conwy Valley.

To finish the day off, we took the cars down to the Bodnant Welsh Food farm shop, featured in this month's BBC Good Food magazine at the top of it's Top 10 Destination Farm Shops list.  After sampling the coffee and cake, we have to agree with them!

Thanks to Foel, Tecwyn and Richard for leading us on another excellent walk, with fantastic views.

Llyn Eigiau is the lake above the village of Dolgarrog where, in 1925, the dam wall broke with the resultant floods killing 16 people in the village.
