Another favourite Western Midlands walk, this 8-mile circular route offered a rich blend of Warwickshire villages, woodland, and farmland making for a thoroughly enjoyable day out. Starting from the green opposite Aston Cantlow Village Hall, we explored the area where William Shakespeare’s parents were married in 1557 at the nearby St John the Baptist Church.
We were thrilled to welcome a great turnout of twenty members, all eager to take in the historical and scenic highlights of the route. Our walk took us via Billesley and Wilmcote, passing points of interest including the 11th-century All Saints’ Church, the historic Billesley Manor Hotel and Mary Arden’s House with each stop adding its own charm and depth to the day.
Special thanks go to Joe, our walk leader, who shared fascinating insights into local history along the way. His knowledge brought the past to life, including a touch of Shakespearean history that connected us even more deeply to the landscape.
We paused for a lovely picnic with views looking south towards the north Cotswolds, a perfect spot to rest and take in the countryside. The day concluded back at our starting point, where many of us enjoyed a well-earned drink at The King’s Head Pub, reportedly where Shakespeare’s parents celebrated their wedding reception.
A memorable day in excellent company—thank you to all who joined us!
