Notes from the Chair – welcome to our new Treasurer & Marketing officer!

Yesterday, Saturday 11 April, the Board met in London for one of our quarterly meetings. I wanted to give you a brief overview of what took place and the key matters we discussed.

As many of you will know, Ian Widdowson has stepped down as Treasurer. As we did not receive any volunteers from within the membership, we decided to look externally for a suitable candidate. Earlier this month, Martin Gilbraith, David Ledsham and I interviewed three applicants. From this process, we invited two of them to join us at the meeting.

The first was Scott Inglis, whom we considered the strongest candidate for Treasurer. The second was Gavin Bailey, who was not selected for the Treasurer role but whom we felt was ideally suited to fill the vacant Marketing Officer position. We arranged for both to meet the Board informally before the meeting began.

During the meeting, we invited each of them to introduce themselves. They then stepped out while the Board discussed and voted on their co-option. I am pleased to report that both were co-opted and have now joined the Board. We are grateful to them both for their readiness to serve the club in this way, and excited to welcome them to the Board.

With our new members present, we moved on to the main business of the meeting. Without going into full detail, the range of topics we covered can be seen from this section of the agenda:

  • Actions to Improve Governance
  • Events with Other Organisations
  • AGM Resolutions
  • NCVO Governance Feedback
  • Board Terms Spreadsheet
  • Website Forum
  • Marketing Update
  • Risk Management and Register
  • Treasurer Risk Mitigation
  • Money Disbursement

As you can imagine, this took some time. The meeting began at 13:15 and concluded shortly before 18:00.

This summary can only give a flavour of the work involved, but you will be able to gain a fuller sense of our discussions from the minutes of previous meetings, which were approved yesterday and will shortly be published on the GOC website. I hope this level of transparency, together with our commitment to publish all minutes in future, will help members understand the work the Board undertakes on their behalf. As always, I welcome any questions or suggestions that arise from this approach.
