are you Stepping Up in 2025? Here`s how….

Training for Leaders/Potential Leaders of Walks and Bike Rides

The Club is keen to help leaders and potential leaders develop their skills, so that we can improve what we offer to our members in terms of quality and quantity of outdoor events. New for 2025 we’re offering two options. You can choose either or both of these depending on what best suits your knowledge and experience.

Option 1 – External Training

The Club has agreed to provide financial support for members to take part in training for walk leaders and bike ride leaders run by external providers. The types of training we have in mind include courses run by The Ramblers and British Cycling, and the Lowland Leader qualification. However, we’re prepared to consider other suitable training that you may want to suggest.

We’re inviting applications both from members who haven’t yet led a walk or bike ride and from existing leaders, who want to improve the quality of walks or bike rides that they lead.

Option 2 – Workshop in Leading Walks

How about meeting other GOC people at a Stepping Up weekend workshop?

This is our new in-house social event, where you can find out what makes for a good walk, how to plan your route, (and where to start from). We will be with other GOC members and leaders, using maps and apps, exploring skills such as measuring distance, and grading a walk. This is aimed at members who have never led a walk before.

We will learn from each other's experience, and find out what works and what doesn`t. There’s no obligation to ever lead a walk – but come and find out what it involves! As well as practicing skills on an actual walk, we will also be looking at writing a website posting which will draw the punters in.

If you are an experienced walk leader who would like to be around and help with the in-house workshops, let us know too.
