East Midlands GOC organises walks and other events mainly in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire. This is a big area and so we have link-ups with nearby Lincolnshire GOC and Transpennine groups. As well as the walks programme, East Midlands GOC is well known for holding camping weekends in the summer, youth hostelling events, open-air theatre trips, and even an annual narrow-boat cruise. Camping and hostelling weekends are especially popular with GOC members from right across the country. Walks normally take place on the third Sunday of the month, starting at 11.00 a.m. Most walks are 5-10 miles long. When there is a whole-weekend event we run an accompanying walk, usually on Saturday, which any member of GOC is very welcome to come on. We suggest bringing a packed lunch for a picnic stop. If there is a handy pub or café then a visit to these usually follows the walk, or walk coordinators might invite you to their house for refreshments or bring something for the end of the walk. Details of all walks are on the GOC website or in the magazine. We try to run events in different parts of the East Midlands to get a good spread of opportunities. Members are encouraged to have a go at coordinating walks themselves, with support if they like for map reading, navigation etc from others in the group. East Midlands GOC Group coordinators are Sue (01406 426445) and Paul (01788 561602). Sue focusses on weekend events and Paul has overall lead on planning the programme, publicity etc. Either Sue or Paul would be delighted to give you any further information, answer any questions or take suggestions. If you are new to the GOC we will make sure you are made welcome, introduced to other members and encouraged to join the fun!
