A walk around the historic sites of Stirling from the university campus
We will go from the University to the Wallace monument on Abbey Craig then descend the south end of the hill to cross the main road and railway line to the ruined Cambuskenneth Abbey, passing through the village and across the river Forth into the main town. We pass through some shopping streets with Victorian and modern shops up through the Old Town and via the burgh market and some Medieval buildings, Mar Wark, Argyll Lodgings, Holyrood and a merchant mansion, up to the Castle through the cemetery. The route then goes over Castle Crag to the Kings Knot garden and Gallery (lunch) and back up the hill round the back of the castle to Gowan Hill, The Beheading Stone, down to the medieval Stirling Bridge (Site of the Battle of Stirling Bridge and the famous victory over the English by William Wallace). We return to the University walking or by available bus.
The route has a couple of steep flights of steps and there are some hills but will be on good paved or gravel paths throughout. Wear some comfy shoes and dress for the weather conditions.
