For one of our Tuesday walk options of GOC goes to Sitges 2025, a repeat of last year (but in reverse), we will take an inland forest route south to the next town of Vilanova, via the Miralpeix summit with views over Sitges, and return along the GR92 national coastal trail, allowing for an optional afternoon swim.
We will walk west from the town centre through the new La Plana development, just above the railway line. We will briefly follow the dry river bed around the campsite (assuming that it is dry as usual, otherwise the road across!) and then past the the villas of Can Girona, overlooking the golf course and the 5-star Eurostars Hotel.
From here we climb steeply to the Miralpeix summit at around 350 feet, via a short detour to the ruin of the historic but tiny Miralpeix fort ('the castle of disappointment'). At the summit we enjoy fine views down over Sitges and along the coast, and inland over the vineyards and neighbouring town of San Pere de Ribes, from a little derelict hilltop lookout post with a little derelict chapel just beneath.
The second half of our outward route takes us along more or less narrow, rough and rocky forest trails, with some ups and downs, until we cross the railway line to the first of the beachfront villas of Vilanova, and from there to the lighthouse.
Here we will break for a good hour for lunch, to allow some free time to explore the city centre a little, buy a sit-down lunch from one of the many cafes or tapas bars, or simply relax and eat a packed lunch on the beach.
Our return along the coastal GR92 trail passes numerous coves and beaches, viewpoints and railway tunnels, until we reach a half-way viewpoint where we take a break, enjoying fine views back over Sitges and beyond (toward the Hermitage featured in our other walk) and backward toward Vilanova.
Just after that we reach the Playa del Muerte or "Dead-man's beach", claimed to be the world's first gay nudist beach, since the 1930s, where we will stop for those that wish to take a swim (nudism optional).
From there on we follow the hiking trail between the coast and the railway line, at times along the railway line itself (but NOT on the tracks themselves or through any tunnels!) - often narrow, rough and rocky and with some short steep slopes.
After passing what's left of the legendary 1990s Atlantida Beach Club, we follow the beach for a short while in front of the golf course (taking care not to "disturb the turtles cruising for sex"), until we reach the Sunway Golf and Terramar hotels.
From here it is about a half hour walk back into town along the length of the promenade, passing the HIV/AIDS memorial with rainbow chairs and the rainbow bench and rainbow crossing to 'Sin Street'.
If you prefer a shorter & easier walk of just 5 miles with less ups & downs, or to spend longer exploring Vilanova, you can take the 7 minute train ride between Sitges and Vilanova (either or both ways). Right next to the train station in Vilanova are the Catalan Railway Museum and the fabulous, newly refurbished Victor Balaguer Museum & Library - see also Visit Vilanova.
Bookings are now open - please book as early as possible and by Friday 17 October at the latest. Free tickets will be limited to 24, for a manageable number with two leaders.
