Beginning at the car park off the A548 near Basingwerk Abbey, Greenfield https://cadw.gov.wales/visit/places-to-visit/basingwerk-abbey we will be following the first portion of the North Wales Pilgrim's Way, through the Abbey remains (free entry, coffee available), on past the old cotton mill and Flour Mill Pond, beneath beautiful tree lined path to St. Winfred's Shrine. The brave and/or repentant may wish to take a dip in the refreshingly cool sacred Well. £2 entry, £1 concessions. Please dress respectfully (bring a spare shirt). https://www.stwinefridesshrine.org/
We will then circle uphill to around 250m through woods and fields, pass a disused quarry, and pause for lunch at the monastery at Pantasaph, https://divinepantasaph.org/ where there's a lovely cafe (or bring a picnic). Our descent back to sea level will be through farmland and copse. At Llannerch Y Mor we'll enjoy a dramatic encounter with the disused ship the Duke of Lancaster, https://www.mythslegendsodditiesnorth-east-wales.co.uk/duke-of-lancaster before returning via the coastal path for train and boat spotting, via Greenfield Dock to our start point near the Abbey.
Dogs must be kept on leashes due to livestock. Dogs aren't permitted in the Shrine, (except for assistance dogs.)
There are lots of stiles and kissing gates, mostly well-kept.
Walking boots advised.
Shrine dippers will need to wear swimming togs and a shirt, and bring a towel.
