This is the final day of the St Dogmael's/Cardigan Spring weekend away but you are most welcome to come just for this walk and/or lunch. Our circular moderate 4.5 mile walk starts with a visit to the 5,500 year old Pentre Ifan Neolithic burial chamber. It’s impressive standing stones supporting a large capstone is one of the finest cromlechs in Wales. From there, we walk steadily uphill to the craggy tors of Carnedd Meibion Owen, which (weather permitting), will reward us with fine views over Newport Bay, Dinas Head, Carningli and the Presili Hills. We then descend into the atmospheric Ty Canol Wood, one of the largest remnants of ancient woodland left in West Wales, with some of it’s twisted oaks believed to be up to 800 years old. It’s moss & lichen covered trunks and boulders create an enchanted, fairylike, feel. The final leg goes through open pastureland.
Following the walk, we will drive a few miles to Castell Henllys Iron Age village, which has a nice café for lunch. Depending on numbers, we may need to pre-order, but we will contact attendees if this is the case. There is also the option of joining their afternoon tour (chargeable) of the site if people wish.
