This easy walk visits the villages of Berkswell and Meriden in what is known as the Meriden Gap, the narrowest part of the green belt between Birmingham and Coventry.
Meriden once regarded itself as the centre of England, the village green features a medieval stone cross and an unusual war memorial honouring cyclist troops in both World Wars. Berkswell features a pretty village green, a Saxon Wayside Preaching Cross and a well where Bercul a Saxon leader was reputedly baptised, so there’s plenty of historical interest.
The walk crosses open farmland, woodland and quiet lanes. On a clear day the eagled eyed might spot the Manhattan skyline on the horizon. Towards the end of the walk we cross the longest boardwalk I’ve seen in a long time. There are no steep hills. Paths could be muddy after rain.
We walk alongside some extensive quarrying and the HS2 construction works, hopefully both will be peaceful on a Sunday. Pub option for refreshments at the end. Bring a packed lunch and dress for the weather on the day. Walking boots recommended.
