This trip is supplementary to the larger spring trip with CycleOut in April
Mallorca is a Spanish island in the Mediterranean, and has a reputation as a haven for off-season cycling and walking, with a network of well-surfaced roads, cycle paths and tolerant drivers. The climbs in the mountains are generally well graded and never too steep. There are beaches along the south coast, a central plateau if you wanted a flatter ride out with isolated hills bearing castles and monasteries to visit, and mountains plunging into the sea along the north coast.
For everyone, there is the historic centre of Palma and its cathedral, the quaint port town of Sóller accessible by narrow gauge railway, and also rustic traditional towns and villages in the middle of the island. Our 3* hotel is in Ca’n Pastilla, just to the east of Palma and at the end of the wide sandy Palma Bay, and a short bus ride from the airport and city centre. It’s a resort with all the facilities you might expect, but a long way from the infamous party spots of Palma Nova and Magalluf and quite genteel. Tourists are more likely to be from elsewhere in Europe rather than from the UK.
The sea in October will be quite warm. Temperatures are generally in the mid 20s, but it can be warmer or cooler. There may be the odd unsettled day with rain showers, so you should bring some rain gear with you.
The core dates for the trip are Saturday 11th to Sunday 19th October, although members can arrive at any time. some of us are arriving earlier and extending their trip to leave later.
As this this is likely to be a small trip as regards numbers, I've not been able to negotiate a GOC discount code this year (The April trip is using the code obtained by CycleOut), you can however get a 6% discount just by registering on the Helios Hotels website. Hotel prices have risen this year but still seem to offer good value.
I don't intend to formally organise cycle rides; the cycle rides will be decided on an ad hoc day by day basis depending on the numbers and desires of those attending (as on previous meets here). Walking will be for the walkers to decide what they want to do; last year the use of a hire car made more of the island accessible without protracted bus or taxi rides and you may consider doing this again. https://www.seemallorca.com/walking/guide and published guide-books will give some walk ideas.
