Ben Chonzie and Auchnafree Hill
Ben Chonzie and Auchnafree Hill
These are two rounded grassy hills that rise to the west or Crief. Ben Chonzie (also called Ben y Hone) is a Munro of 931m, and Auchnafree hill is a Corbett of 789m. The hills are connected by a high broad ridge across the head of Loch Turret and can be climbed together as a more interesting excursion to the usual out and back route up Ben Chonzie.
The route is straightforward, but there are some pathless sections which will be boggy in places (even in the driest conditions). About an 11 mile (18km) circuit with c1050 metres of climbing, about 6 to 7 hours. There are options to cut the walk short at a couple of points (after Auchnafree Hill) if necessary.
People intending to take part in this event should read GOC's document Safety in the Hills.
