  • TerrainWalking is mainly on rough paths, tracks and grass, which are very muddy and difficult walking in places.

This is a very green section of theĀ  LOOP section through pastures, fields and woodland with little road walking, also passing the large Aldenham Reservoir. On a clear day there are good views.

The highlights of this walk include Pinnerwood with its charming cottages and Pinnerwood House, home of the famous Victorian author Bulwer-Lytton, Grim's Ditch (the mansion of W S Gilbert, of Gilbert and Sullivan fame) and Bentley Priory with its World War II connections.

The walk is longer than most sections of the London Loop - and seems even longer because of the often muddy walking conditions. There are some options to shorten it; however intermediate railway stations lie some way off the route and link routes have to be followed to reach them. The best options are at Hatch End (Overground trains to Euston) - walking distance about 5 miles, or Stanmore (Jubilee line) - walking distance about 9.5 miles. There are also a number of intersecting TfL bus services.
