We will be doing a "there and back" walk along the Devil's Dyke from Reach to the Newmarket Racecourse.

The Devil's Dyke is scheduled as an ancient Monument and is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is believed to be Anglo-Saxon in origin and to have been built in the 7th century to help protect the East Angles from attacks. A public footpath runs along the summit of the Dyke.

Several gaps have been cut into the Dyke including one for a road and and the "running gap" on the Newmarket racecourse's "Cesarewitch" Course.

We will stop for lunch on the section of the Dyke running through the Newmarket racecourse before retracing the route back to Reach.
