Castell-y-Bere in the Cadair Idris foothills

By Simon Robson.

The weather was ideal for our walk in the Dysynni Valley. The four of us began with a visit to Caffi y Ganolfan and then took the road for a short distance before leaving it to hit the footpath while swifts flew above our heads. The pasture and light woodland was quite gentle on our way to the early thirteenth century Castell y Bere. There we admired Craig yr Aderyn and the rest of the valley in the foothills of Cadair Idris. After that it was  but a short step along the road to Llanfihangel-y-Pennant where we ate lunch under the yews in the cemetery and heard the sound of the cuckoo. We then crossed the road to rejoin the footpath passing the now derelict Capel Sardis which was recently featured on the BBC because of survey being taken by the Royal Commission of Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales on the current state of churches and chapels. The footpath then climbed quite steeply through hill pasture and dry stone walls and then down through more woodland and along a tree lined road, which provided welcome shade, completing the circular walk. Then we drove south, stopping at the Corris Craft Centre for refreshments.
