THOMAS HARDY’S “JUDE THE OBSCURE” INVOLVEMENT WITH OXFORD – WED 18TH FEB 2026
Join our Andrew DILLON, and myself on an exploration of Thomas HARDY'S most depressing novels of his character - "JUDE THE OBSCURE".
The story starts out at FAWLEY near WANTAGE, before the characters travel and live around Southern England - semi itinerant raising three children on the way.
The walk started at Oxford Railway Station as JUDE, SUE, OLD MASTER TIME & YOUNG TIME arrive at Oxford. They head for Broad Street and Sheldonian, OXFORD. They have difficulty finding accomodation for them all, particularly having children. Whilst in temporary B & B one of the children murders his other siblings, and commits suicide. WOW what a theme for a walk!!!
Anyway our walk follows the Oxford Canal up to Jericho, explored ST SEPULCHRE'S CEMETERY, were in fiction the children were laid to rest.
We will also visit the Greenking PH named after the book for refreshments.
