Sitges history in three words -Malvasia, Bacardi and plenty of Cava

If it`s 4.00 pm on a Monday in Sitges there's bound to be a GOC Events Abroad just about to kick off, this time with Rosa, our very own Catalan local guide.

Turning away from stunning sea views,( where exactly WAS that Nudist beach?) we began a History tour of this, the most alternative of Mediterranean Meccas. Rosa gave us  a hint of things to come  - yes alcohol, in the shape of Malvasia grapes accompanied by a  bohemian modernista movement – where anything went, whatever Franco said.

From the landmark Bartomeou Church Tower, we were led down castellated alleyways into a medieval reminders of early years. Those Americanos, who brought  wealth back from Cuba and beyond, then the emergence of style. We saw gorgeous carvings above, and local hero Mr Bacardis` museum of all things rum (yes, more alcohol). Our budding architectural gurus also spotted a classic Gaudi-inspired Modernist mansion, sparking a debate – was it organic or orgasmic?

With such judicious timing, James Bailey`s  event led us neatly into our evening's reception in Sitges`s oldest street, to the Palau de Rei Moro - Castle  of the Moorish King. He was out Ruling somewhere, so Martin G provided Nibbles, grabbed  a mic and compered party games. All the week`s attendees found ingenious ways of getting to know each other..Yes, and more drinks again too – in the bubbly guise of that local, yet internationally famous sparkler, Cava.
