The Isle of Barra
The Isle of Barra
This trip continues our exploration of Scottish Islands that we have been doing over the last few years. We've visited Barra fairly recently in 2021 for a cycling trip, but most of us have never walked on this island. Barra is at the southern end of Outer Hebrides; it is a hilly island, rising to 384m at its highest point of Heabhal and there is a chain of high hills in the middle of the island. There is good hill and coastal walking and stunning beaches, which we now expect on these trips, plus there is a bus service which we could use to visit the more remote places of the island chain.
I have booked places in the Dunard Hostel in two dormitory rooms. Note we will be sharing the hostel with other guests and we don't have exclusive use. The hostel has a good kitchen plus there are a couple of restaurants in Castlebay where we can eat out. Castlebay has a good sized Coop store where we can get shopping.
Bicycles can be hired on the island to explore the road network if desired, or you might want to bring your own cycle across on the ferry.
