Osterley to Hanwell
This varied route starts at Osterley station on the busy Heathrow Airport branch of the Piccadilly line. After passing down a couple of suburban streets we enter Osterley Park. We then take a meandering route visiting some of the quieter more rural parts of this attractive landscaped National Trust park. We will have good views of an attractive lake and of Osterley House.
From the café in the Stables Courtyard right by the grand Osterley House, we leave the park in a northerly direction to cross the M4 and a field into the settlement Norwood Green, with its interesting church. We then avoid the main road through a winding parallel path running through the Tentelow Woodland. Our route then joins the Grand Junction Canal for about a mile, passing the famous Three Bridges site, an engineering feat of its time where railway, canal and road intersect. Next we see the impressive yellow brick buildings of the former Hanwell Insane Asylum (now Ealing Hospital) to the left of the towpath and the Hanwell flight of Locks. The last part of the walk follows the River Brent northwards to reach the Uxbridge Road where there will be an opportunity for social drinks and food at The Viaduct Fullers pub.
Leaving the pub there are two main routes to Hanwell station. The most picturesque is to turn right out of the pub and go back the way you came, re-crossing the river Brent. Go down some steps to join the west bank, on the left as you look north to the Wharncliffe railway viaduct. Turn left upstream along the river and through a large riverside hay meadow to reach the impressive Viaduct towering 60 metres above the valley. The viaduct was designed by Brunel and still carries heavy rail traffic to this day, including high speed trains. which carries the Great Western Main Line 20m above the Brent Valley. Immediately before the viaduct cross the river by a footbridge and then go slightly right and uphill through a small wooded area. This will bring you to the leafy suburban streets near Hanwell Station.
An alternative slightly shorter on street route involves turning instead left from the pub, then left into Half Acre Road and left into Connolly Road. Either way, walk along Station Approach parallel to the railway line to your left to reach the station entrance. Hanwell station is now a busy station on the Elizabeth line, but the station buildings have been sensitively restored in their old Great Western Railway colours.
