Lady Bagot’s Drive

Event Details

Cancelled event for tomorrow due to Storm Ashley having strong winds and rain. It has now been rescheduled for October 27th.

Explore this 5 mile circular trail near Ruthin, Denbighshire. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 2 h 5 min to complete. This is a very popular area for birding, hiking, and running, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a lead.

This circular path, known only to a lucky few, is Lady Bagot’s Drive - created by Lord Bagot for his wife at the time Clocaenog Forest was planted. It is a beautiful-varied gorge walk with views, fields, forest and a river. Start your walk from Rhewl village where there are 2 small car parks and some street parking. Lady Bagot’s Drive was created by Lord Bagot for his wife at the time Clocaenog Forest was planted. The first half of the walk follows the river Afon Clwedog and in part, passes through a deep gorge. The riverside path is good and wide, but from time to time there are steep drops to one side.

The walk then heads up heading towards the forest. As you climb up the view of the Clywidian Range in front of you steadily gets better and better. The tall pine forest is beautifully atmospheric. Some of the paths are narrow, with a steep valley to one side, but the paths are in good shape and safe for most. Good outdoor footwear is advised.

The last part of the walk is a few hundred yards on the main road (there is a pavement, but please take care around traffic), before heading back to the car park.

Some of the fields through which the route passes may contain livestock, so if your dog comes with you, it's best to have it on a lead.
