On a showery Thursday morning seven GOC members met up at Newton Abbot Library for a walk back in time to see some of the notable buildings and landscapes that makes Newton Abbot the market town it is today.
We visited 18 interesting sites around the town and had a walk in the surrounding hillside that gave us a wonderful panoramic views across the town and beyond.
At our meeting place we talked about the fine Library building and how it came to be. We moved on to the Union bridge that crosses the River Lemon and was once the boundary between Newton Abbot and Newton Bushall before they became one.
Other notable buildings were the Town Council Offices and GWR Museum, St Leonards Tower, Austins Department Store, The Pharmacy Cafe, and The War memorial eventually stopping for our lunch down at the Town Quay .
Afterwards we walked on to see the Signal gantry which is under refurbishment and Forde House before arriving at the Roundabout and Overpass at Penn Inn. This may seem very ordinary but it was once a swimming and boating lake but it was swept away in the 1980s for a supermarket and roundabout much to this dismay of the local people!
We then followed a road that led through Forde Park and up above the town to wonderful views of the town and the surrounding countryside. This brought us to Woolborough Church and then back to Town for a cafe stop at the end of the walk.
I'd like to Thank everyone who came along and hope you enjoyed the day.
