Up the Downs - a glorious romp across historic parkland
This airy upland stroll of 6.8 miles kicks off with glorious views..Sugarloaf, Hay Bluff and Lord Herefords Knob on the horizon, with Abberley and Malvern Hills nearby.
Starting just off the A44, our walk lies exclusively within Bromyard Downs`s open footpaths (registered common land) and National Trust Brockhampton Estate. We will hear of strange remnants of secret WW2 Operational Bases (designed to hold resistance fighters), see a Farm `produce pod` selling locally grown fruit & veg and stop at a `hidden` Parish Church. In Capability Brown style, Brockhampton`s 700 acres include semi-natural ancient woodland, streams, valley and specimen trees – some 500 years old. Lawn Pool, created in 1769 for local landed gentry, is available for our lunch stop today.
Our return includes a short ascent affording glimpses of the `new` 18th cent. mansion, before entering an old Racecourse site. Here more shaded tree cover once again affords shelter from heat or showers. The small black-and-white Market town of Bromyard a mile or so west hosts pubs etc., for further refreshment
