This will be a varied 9 mile walk taking in parts of historic Rochester, Rochester Bridge, Upper and Lower Upnor and Hoo Marina. After setting off we will cross Rochester Bridge and walk along the River Medway to Frindsbury. A short sharp climb will afford views over the Medway Towns. We will then descend past the Royal Engineers' water activities centre before arriving in Upper Upnor with its Tudor castle (owned by English Heritage). We walk to Lower Upnor. From here we will do either a clockwise or anticlockwise circuit of the Upper and Lower Saxon Shore Way to Hoo Marina. Our arrival time, tide timetable and tide height will be the determining factor. The Lower Saxon Shore Way path which runs along the River Medway can be flooded at high tide! Hoo Marina is fun if you have an interest in boats. It hosts a variety of boats, including three light ships, which are now floating residential homes. Once back in Lower Upnor we will retrace our steps, giving views of the new development in St Mary's Island.
Once back in Rochester you can either depart, or you can join the GOC 50th Anniversary Celebration Tea (see separate event. To give an indication of numbers for catering, please pre-book a place on that event to indicate your attendance by 20:00 on MONDAY 1st JULY at the latest).
