JOGLE Day 86 Appledore to Clovelly
From Appledore we follow minor roads round to Appledore Bridge, then on paths between dunes and river to the narrow entrance of the Taw estuary and back on the open sea side of Northam Burrows to Westward Ho! The only place name in Britain to end with an exclamation mark.
After Westward Ho! the cliff path gets more bumpy with narrow deep valleys ideal for smuggling, particularly Bucks Mills and Clovelly
Before reaching Clovelly there is the 19th Century Hobby Drive, built by French POW in the Napoleanic Wars, as a project to occupy them.
Clovelly is very special with it's steep cobbled streets like a Hovis bread advert leading to a small harbour. Charles Kingsley wrote the Water Babies and Westward Ho! there.
