Follow National Cycle Route 75 to the A71 and over the other side towards Kirknewton, but turn right on Leyden Road. We follow the undulating Leyden Road up to A70. Turn right on A70 to Little Vantage. Just before a car park we join the Scotland Great Trek Route 'Cross Borders Drove Road' on a path called Thieves Road which will take us over the Pentland Hills moorland to West Linton.

Drovers drove or led farmers livestock to market towns. They were vulnerable to ambushes as they would have many farmers livestock. They were even more vulnerable on their lonely way back as they carried lots of cash. It lead in many cases to the setting up of banks, so drovers could bank the proceeds from livestock sales in the market towns and farmers could cash cheques locally.
