My name is David and I’ve been asked to be Group Coordinator for the Transpennine region. I’ve been a member of GOC for just one year, so many of you may not know me. This brief message outlines my plans for the GC role in 2023.
There are a good number of events already arranged by the regular Transpennine organisers – I thank them for this, and hope they continue to organise events as normal. Anything I arrange will be in sympathy with existing events and traditions.
I hope to extend the choice of activities (mainly regional walks), and to encourage other members to organise events over the year. In particular I’d like to put on a regular ‘once a month’ program of full day walks, on weekends. For this I need your help. While I can arrange and lead some of these, I hope other members will come forward and make this a solid fixture in the calendar for 2023 – so feel free to contact me with any event suggestions or plans if you need support with this.
I’m based in Macclesfield, so any walks I arrange will be over this side of the Transpennine region. The walks I plan to arrange will typically be 8-12 miles, with ~2000ft ascent. I have experience of planning local walks and I like to seek out lesser known footpaths and open access land in the area. This can mean the walking is a little more challenging than expected. However, as a walk leader I will always be sympathetic to the participants on the walk; modifying a walk ‘on-the-fly’ is sometimes necessary (e.g. bad weather, or tiredness).
I would like to think my walks are a little more adventurous than ‘easy days out’. But, of course, this is always a little subjective! However, my first couple of walk events will be a little less-so, so you can get to know me and my leadership style. I can’t promise you sunshine, but I can promise you a good day out in the Peak District.
