UPTON, THE HAGBOURNE'S, DIDCOT TO SOUTHAMPTON RAILWAY, OXON
A 7 mile figure of eight walk exploring the challenges the Victorian Railway builders encountered getting the "Didcot, Newbury, Southampton Railway" up over the Downs from the low GWR at Didcot. At Upton is the meeting point where a deep curving cutting into the Chalk Downs suddenly comes out on to a extensive embankment down into the valley. We are also aided by Alfred Robert QUINTON (1853-1934) who painted many scenes, which became Salmon Postcards.
