West Kent - Westerham, Limpsfield Chart, Crockham Hill and Chartwell. 2024 Planning Meeting.
This is a moderate 9.5 mile walk through wonderful countryside. Initially, we will head south and then south-west, following parts of the Greensand Way over Limpsfield Common until we reach Limpsfield Chart. From there we will head south towards Crockham Hill, where we will stop for lunch. After lunch, we stop briefly at Crockham church to look at Octavia Hill's grave before climbing Jacob's Ladder to Mariners Hill & Froghole, with superb views over the Weald. We then pass Chartwell, from above, and French Street, before crossing Hosey Common to return to our starting point.
At some point during this walk, we will hold a short, informal planning meeting for 2024. Please come prepared with ideas for walks that you may be prepared to lead next year.
History.
Westerham is home to one of the jewels of the National Trust's crown – Chartwell, the former home of Sir Winston Churchill. But he isn't the area's only claim to fame. War hero General James Wolfe was born in Westerham and his childhood home, Quebec House, is also open to the public.
Octavia Hill was one of the three founders of the National Trust and a social reformer who worked to improve housing conditions for the urban poor. She is buried with her sister, Miranda, and companion Harriot Yorke, in the parish churchyard at Crockham Hill.
