Another soggy start for last Sunday's walk, hastily arranged, from Tunbridge Wells to Frant.
Six of us started from the station, and we gained a new member along the way, making us the magnificent seven!
Our first stop, the Pantiles, for those who hadn't visited before or seen the Chalybeate Spring. Then on to the 'proper' walk, passing sites of the Subbuteo factory and the property where Field Marshall Viscount Montgomery of Alamein had lived. Climbing the ridge that dominates the south of the town, we took a route through the old cemetery to pass through Brickhouse Farm. The distinctive ornate 'A' on buildings denoted part of the Abergavenny Estate.
The sound of running water was not far away. The river at the bottom of Chase Wood ran into the river Teise, marking the county boundary of Kent and Sussex. There was the inevitable mud underfoot up through Chase Wood to Frant village and our lunch stop. Just as we were eating our sarnies, down came the rain ! Thankfully, we managed to shelter under the church lych gate, apart from Julian, who decided to continue eating in the rain under his umbrella.
Our return walk retraced our steps through Chase Wood and Brickhouse Farm to the golf course, previously a 'horse course' used by the Nevills of Eridge Park, a few miles away.
Back in town, we gathered at the Opera House for chats over drinks. A great way to end the day with great company. Thanks to everyone who joined us.
