Sussex 4 miles nature walk on Wolstonbury Hill

This was a short circular nature walk from the Jack & Jill Inn via New Way Lane and around Wolstonbury Hill up the west facing slope to the trig point and back on a brideway.
The focus of the walk was to find the Sussex county flower, the rampion. We did: scores of them.

Carline thistles were common: see https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/wildlife-explorer/wildflowers/carline-thistle Other flowers included Common Centuary & Yellow Wort (both native gentians) Red Bartsia, Greater Knapweed, Knapweed, Small Scabous, Rest Harrow, Eyebright, Harebells (lots) and more...

There were butterflies too - Chalkhill Blue, Speckled Wood, Meadow Brown and Holly Blue were all seen. Common and Small Blues eluded us: the weather was lovely but a bit too windy for these butterflies perhaps. There were views across the A23 to Newtimber Hill, where a similar nature walk is in preparation for GOC.

My thanks to all for coming.
