On one of the hottest days of the year 16 brave souls boarded The Caversham Princess for a jolly cruise down the Thames. No sooner than we were on board than the charming staff served us a simply delicious cream tea with strawberry jam, home made warm scones and copious amounts of cream! This kept us going for the whole afternoon.
We first entered Caversham Lock en route for Sonning. Past rowing clubs and youngsters in their canoes we glided gently past meadows and fishermen relaxing on their chairs on the banks watching their rods and floats bobbing on the surface. Not much action though. Perhaps it was too hot for the fish who probably remained quietly below the surface just chilling.
At Sonning lock and under the bridge the river opened up revealing rather exclusive houses each with beautfully manicured lawns running down to the river edge. On either side of the river we could see meadows brightly lit in the afternoon sunshine whilst the occasional cow could be seen grazing in the distance. As we reached Shiplake we passed the embarkation spot for boys from Shiplake College rowing club. This was the end of the journey eastwards and from there we headed back to Caversham where some members adjourned to the Moderation pub for a farewell drink.
Possibly our most enjoyable river cruise so far. I hope all who came on the trip thoroughly enjoyed it as I did.
