On a fine morning 27 GOC walkers, mostly from the Western Midlands group assembled under the clock tower of Aberystwyth Railway Station. We were all on our best behaviour as one of the visitors was Deputy Chairman Martin Gilbraith! We were pleased that another Martin aka Western Midlands Joint Group Coordinator Mr Darby was looking bright eyed and bushy tailed, as the previous evening he had been knocking back what he claimed were non alcoholic cocktails. We progressed up a fairly steep hill to the top of the funicular railway to meet the 3 who had elected to travel that way. Sadly we had to wait whilst they finished their coffee and cake! As you can see from the photo, when they finally joined us they were very contrite, NOT.
We continued along the high path towards our destination Borth. There was much lively conversation as friends old and new chatted away. Unfortunately the promised views of the Lleyn Peninsula failed to materialise, I think this was probably due to the suns reflection on the sea. We paused for lunch, where some brave walkers perched on the cliff edge to eat.
After lunch we continued on along the coast path, memorable quotes being “it can’t be any worse going down” “there are steps where it gets really steep” and from an unnamed walk leader “look at that rock outcrop, it’s just waiting to fall into the sea” our path ahead was on said outcrop! Having paused for a group photo by the War Memorial on the headland above Borth, we all made it safely down to the town in brilliant sunshine, where the locals had decorated the town for our arrival. Some visited a cafe whilst others favoured a beach front pub, but we all made it to the station on time for our train ride back to Aberystwyth. We rounded the day off with an excellent meal, again perfectly organised by Martin Darby. Thanks Martin for a great day, of what was to be, a fantastic weekend away.
