Manning Up from Manaton

Ten of us set out from Manaton to walk a challenging 6 miles across a beautiful, varied landscape.

We climbed amidst ferns and rocks to the top of Hayne Down, with views on all sides despite the initial tropical mist! Lots of photo opportunities here notably a view of a rock stack called Bowerman's Nose and the familiar outline of Haytor Rocks.

We descended to a narrow lane where we were herded by a Young Farmer and a quad bike and a large flock of sheep! The sheep passed us rapidly: they knew the route without a map!

Our next climb was up to Hound Tor and a welcome break for lunch, after which we descended via the Medieval village , continuing down the wooded hillside to an ancient stone Bridge across Becka Brook.

Our third climb up Black Hill we cut short because the hot sun was now out and the humidity was increasing, so we detoured back to Manaton with more beautiful views. Passing through the wooded Estate we could hear buzzards above us. We had also spotted a small toad, a large (Stag?) Beetle , some beautiful Speckled Wood butterflies and some plate sized Fungi. We all felt appropriately informed.

We ended at Parke National Trust cafe for a cuppa and cake and a chance to rest weary bones!

All in all a great day out!

TONY

MANY THANKS to Tony for planning and leading this lovely walk!

PSĀ  Our arrival at the cafe was celebrated by the unexpected arrival of a flock of 7 red arrows roaring overhead in tight formation!
