Western Midlands group members enjoyed a fantastic day out on the canal aboard Cecilia. The weather was perfect, peaking at 27°C, and our route offered a wonderful mix of sights, from urban landmarks such as the Selly Oak railway viaduct, Cadbury’s iconic Bournville factory, and Birmingham University, to the peaceful rural landscapes around Alvechurch and Hopwood.
Our group of 12 included three recent GOC recruits, and it was a pleasure to welcome them along for their first outing with us.
A huge thank you goes to the Worcester, Birmingham and Droitwich Canals Society, who were warm and accommodating hosts. Not only did they provide us with the narrowboat Cecilia for the day, but they also gave members the opportunity to navigate the boat, a unique and enjoyable experience for many.
The route itself was rich and varied. We began amidst peaceful countryside, passed through the impressive Wast Hills Tunnel, which takes about an hour by boat, and continued to Birmingham University via the lush green corridor alongside the University. For those who preferred a hill walk, leader Chris T took us for a two mile climb over the top of the tunnel.
The return leg was equally enjoyable, with all walkers aboard Cecilia for a relaxing cruise back. A full day of views, sociable chats and new experiences for many. Thanks Chris for the considerable effort and planning in creating a memorable day out.
