A circular walk in North East Hampshire

In the wake of Storm Claudia crossing the UK on the preceding Friday there was some doubt as to whether this walk might take place. However, a prior recce of the route showed it to be perfectly negotiable, and 12 GOC members turned up on Sun 16th November for this 6 mile walk at Vernham Dean on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border.
Although it was heavily overcast at the start of the walk, it was at least dry with little in the way of a breeze and decidedly balmy. We headed NE past the village church, where a service was in progress, and out into open farmland with wide views. It soon became evident that some members of the group were moving faster than others, and it was decided to split into two smaller groups with the speed merchants taking a longer route. With Whatsapp shared locations feature, each group could monitor the other's position. At least that was the theory. In the event, both groups met up on the Test Way without too much stress, and we descended a delightful footpath into the quiet hamlet of Netherton where there was time to admire the houses of much character and numerous examples of ornamental topiary.

We then headed NW on a steepish footpath that led out into open fields again arriving at the outpost of Linkenholt. This consisted of a few farm buildings, several houses, some seemingly converted from the old village school, hall and shop/post office. There were views up to Walbury Hill, the highest point in SE England (if you discount the tower on the top of Leith Hill in Surrey). Once again it was decided to split into two groups for the return to Vernham Dean. By this time there were patches of blue sky and we cheerfully met up at The George PH, where most of us enjoyed an excellent meal at a table prepared for us. ''
