There is something truly special about the Scottish hills, but they become even more meaningful when shared with a community where you can be your authentic self. This month, I joined the Glasgow Gay Ramblers for their monthly walk in Greenock, and it was a journey filled with breathtaking views, deep history, and a lot of laughter.
šæ The Journey and the Views
Our trail took us through the stunning landscapes surrounding Greenock. As we climbed, the town below transformed into a patchwork of houses nestled against the vast, blue backdrop of the Clyde. The weather was on our side, with dramatic clouds and bright sunshine highlighting the rolling green hills and distant mountain peaks.
One of the most moving parts of the walk was stopping at the Memorial Well at Loch Thom. Reading the "Ode of Remembrance" and "Ode to a Soldier" in such a peaceful, natural setting was a beautiful moment of reflection for the whole group.
š Community, Safety, and Fun
I was struck by how safe and open the environment felt. Hiking can sometimes feel like a solitary activity, but with the GOC, it is a social celebration. The group was a wonderful gathering of people from all walks of life. From the moment we started, the air was filled with fun, stories, and constant laughter.
It is a rare and beautiful thing to find a space where you can enjoy the great outdoors while feeling completely understood and supported by your own people.
š A Special Thank You
I want to extend a massive thank you to Robert Watt, our Event Organiser. Robert, your planning and leadership made the day seamless and enjoyable for everyone.
I also want to thank the other GOC members I met along the way. Thank you for the warm welcome, the great conversations, and for making my journey into the Greenock hills so memorable.
šø Highlights of the Day
- The Gathering: Seeing everyone come together, ready to tackle the hills with smiles on their faces.
- The Scenery: That incredible view looking down toward the water (pictured in my report!).
- The Challenge: We pushed ourselves and successfully completed 25,000 steps during this walk!
- The Vibe: Realizing that no matter how steep the climb, there was always someone nearby with a joke or an encouraging word.
Whether you are a seasoned hiker or just looking to get some fresh air with a friendly group, I cannot recommend the Glasgow Gay Ramblers enough. Iām already looking forward to the next monthly walk!
