Earlier in the year mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington re-opened YHA Ambleside following its £1.42 million facelift. The refurbishment included more washrooms and a number of premium ensuite bedrooms with a lake view. As well as total redecoration and furniture throughout, there is also a new reception area and more public facilities, including an education and conference space with the latest audio visual equipment. The newly renovated restaurant, The Lakeside is open throughout the day to guests and the general public. There visitors can enjoy an array of freshly cooked dishes while soaking in the views across Windermere.
Over the past five years YHA (England and Wales) has invested £19.5 million to create a network of Youth Hostels that include ensuite bedrooms, honeymoon suites, licensed bars, restaurants and educational facilities.
'Women 1st' credits YHA (England Wales) Chief Executive Caroline White with changing the public image of the historic brand. In 2012, YHA was ranked at number four in the best hotel category, just behind the luxury hotel chains, Sofitel, Hotel Du Vin & Bistro and Malmaison, in the Guardian, Observer and guardian.co.uk Readers' Travel Awards 2012.
