Two Rivers Walk via the Tamar Bridge

The walk began on the Devon side of the River Tamar looking up at the bridges towering above us – the rail bridge completed by Brunel in 1859, and the road bridge that opened in 1961.

It was then a steep climb to the bridge entrance, where we looked around the Tamar Bridge Information Centre.

There were 17 of us from here, and we walked across the bridge into Cornwall and down to the water’s edge where there are various points of interest depicting the local history.

We then enjoyed looking around the cottage and garden once owned by Mary Newman (Sir Francis Drake’s first wife).

The walk (partly through a woodland) took us to a viewpoint looking back over Plymouth and Dartmoor.

Soon after that we were in Churchtown Farm Nature Reserve and the view changed to that of the River Lynher and the surrounding Cornish countryside. This is where we had our lunch.

We then walked on to the pretty village of Forder, and then a steep climb to our bus stop in St Stephen’s to catch the bus back to Saltash.

Unfortunately the coffee shop that we had prearranged to cater for us at 3.20pm had closed. It was disappointing, but everybody seemed ready to walk back over the bridge to their cars and start their long trips home.

Thank you to Roy, Ian, Keith and Neil who all contributed to the wonderful photos that remember the day.
