Trekking the Tamar Estuary – Devon Group – 6th April’25

16 of us met up at Market Hall café, Devonport, where we were treated to a 10 minute film about Devonport Naval Base in “The Immersive Dome” – an impressive 15 metre dome featuring 360 degree visuals.

We then walked to Mutton Cove, a tiny fishing cove just outside the Dockyard wall. Our walk then took us along by the River Tamar passed the outdoor swimming pools and up steps to the Memorial commemorating Captain Scott’s 1911/12 expedition to the South Pole. Nearby we went up the steps to the Observation Tower – a circular viewing platform offering 360 degree views of Plymouth, Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth Sound, and looking across the River Tamar to Mount Edgcumbe in Cornwall.

Our walk continued to the Royal William Yard, built in 1825 – 1835 to supply the Royal Naval fleet, and now a bustling hub of restaurants, bars and shops. We were treated to the Good Food and Craft Market which is held on the 1st Sunday of the month and where GOC members were able to buy their lunch. To reach our lunch stop we climbed the “Stairway to Devon” which has a glass viewing platform overlooking the Tamar Estuary, and leads to Devil’s Point where we had our lunch overlooking Plymouth Sound.

It was soon time to take the bus back to the starting point where some of us enjoyed tea and cakes at the local café.
