A Derby city discovery

The first East Midlands walk of the year was an urban one. Derby is a city that is often overlooked by tourists and walkers as they head to the Peak District instead, so I felt it would be interesting to give an insight into Derby's industrial and Roman heritage.

We explored the area where Romans settled, naming the town 'Derventio' before the Saxons celebrated the road to Chester by creating the 'Little Chester' settlement. The Derwent was a theme of the walk, with the powerful river making Derby an industrial powerhouse with mill buildings along the length of the city's main waterway. Our intrepid band of adventurers explored flint, paper, silk and cotton mill buildings, before returning through the riverside park to the elegant Irongate and Cathedral Quarter.

Thanks to all of you who attended. It was a privilege to lead a GOC East Midlands walk and I hope to join many others in the future.
