Yealmpton Circular Walk – 19th April 2023

Devon members enjoyed a bright and breezy ramble in the South Hams centred on the village of Yealmpton. We walked through the village and soon left the noisy traffic behind as we headed along a new path called the Silverbridge Way towards Brixton. Here we linked up with the Erme-Plym trail and struck out across fields and through woods carpeted with wild garlic and and full of birdsong. The terrain was undulating so every short climb was rewarded by new vistas revealed at the top of the ridges.

Our route described a figure of eight so we returned to the village to eat our lunches beside the river Yealm. We were joined by two more members for the shorter afternoon loop which followed the river downstream as it meandered through the water meadows where the primroses were putting on a very fine show. We crossed over the river at Puslinch bridge and returned on the opposite bank past some lime kilns. This used to be the entrance to Kitley caves, now no longer open to the public.

Finally we retired to an excellent local garden centre for tea and cake.
