Hiking the North-West Frontier (of Hampshire!), Berkshire and Mid-Thames GOC Group explored this remote area straddling the border between Hampshire and Wiltshire. We were joined by members from Swindon, Towcester and London (not forgetting Bert the dog!) on a 7.5 mile circular walk starting and finishing at the quiet village of Vernham Dean, nestled low in the Wessex Downs to the south of Walbury Hill, at 297m height, the highest point in SE England.
The weather was rather indifferent - overcast with occasional spits of rain but it wasn't cold and there were clear signs of Spring well underway. Considering the amount of rain we've had recently it wasn't too muddy underfoot, the route keeping mainly to tracks and short stretches of tarmac, and we were a cheery bunch engaging in plenty of banter. There were 2 climbs, the first to Knoll's Hill with views to the distant South Downs and we passed through the hamlets of Fosbury and Henley, the former sharing its name with the American high-jumper Dick Fosbury. With plenty of twists and turns through woodland and open country the views were constantly changing. Returning to Vernham Dean, most of us repaired to the friendly George Inn for a meal. We were all made very welcome - including Bert the Dog - and a good time was had by all. We will have to re-visit this area again!
