Avebury & West Kennet Long Barrow 1-5-22

To those of us who live in the area, it's all too easy to take the ancient landscape of Wiltshire for granted. So it is, I give greatful thanks to Ted for reminding me of what's on my doorstep.

This 7 to 8 mile walk started beside the A4 Marlborough to Calne road at the Sanctuary. Heading along byways and field paths to the West Kennet Long Barrow. Here, the opportunity was taken to look inside the first burial chamber and enjoy the far reaching views over the downs, before following the field path to Avebury, passing the mysterious Silbury hill. Mysterious in as much as it's a ruddy great mound in an otherwise flat landscape with no obvious rhyme or reason for its existence. Despite various archealogical interventions over the years, there's no hidden reason for its existence, either.

Lunch was had at Avebury visitor centre, prior to inspecting part of its stone circle on leaving the village. The route climbed the old bath road to join the Ridgeway at a high spot on the downs and thence follow it downhill to the start.

Many thanks to those who came along, you all made a good walk even better.
