West Kent – Summer social and short walk(s) in Hastings – 18th June, 2022.

A disappointing turnout for our summer social event with short, slower-paced walks, however, for those that attended, there was near-perfect weather after the sweltering heat of Friday, with a cool on-shore breeze.

Meandering through the high street and old town, we eventually headed up the East Hill steps to Hasting's Country Park. A slow stroll took us along the grassy cliff edge leading to the long distance Saxon Shore Way. Avoiding the up and down route, we took a circular path to Ecclesbourne reservoir, now privately owned. Stopping to eat our packed lunches on the grass of a camping site, before returning to Hastings and a slow walk through the narrow streets up to West Hill with the castle, caves and impressive old tall buildings.

Back in town, we eventually found an outdoor pub garden where copious drinks were drunk to quench our thirst!! Later in the evening, eating fish and chips in a nearby restaurant, followed by a few more drinks before staggering back to the train station. A really pleasant and enjoyable day with exceptional company.

Colin Turner.
