Tor y foel – the calm before the storm!

On a Saturday morning in February, a dozen people turned up at Llangynidr for a walk lead by Huw to the summit of Tor y foel.  We couldn’t believe our luck with the bright, sunny weather.  We started with a gentle walk along the beautiful, tree lined Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, including Llangynidr locks.  For lunch we enjoyed the vista across Talybont Reservoir, after finding a spot to shelter from the east wind (a sign of things to come!).  The views from the summit of the surrounding valleys and peaks of the eastern Brecon Beacons, as well as Llangynidr mountain, were spectacular.  As we descended back to Llangynidr, the Usk valley opened in front of us, with Crickhowell and the Sugar Loaf in the distance and Buckland Hall nestled below.  Our local guide, Howard, kept us informed/amused with regular titbits of information.
