This was a delightful eight mile circular walk around the lower Rhymney Valley through the villages of Draethen, Lower Machen and Cefn Mably. On a glorious day, we set out from Michaelstone-Y-Fedw and walked through lanes, fields full of crops, beautiful woodlands, and meadows, alongside the river, to reach the lovely village of Draethen. After a lunch stop in the village, we climbed up and over Ruperra Wood, taking in fantastic views and the remains of the summer house that once stood on the top, to the Ruperra estate. After learning more about the estate and its early 17th Century castle, we walked through more fields of crops and meadows, and over streams, to the village of Cefn Mably, and then back to the start. A real treat of a walk.
