Parc Penallta and Eglwysilan Common

Fourteen individuals and our canine friend Bentley, set on a very cold, but beautifully sunny early winter's day, on an 8 mile walk from and to Parc Penallta near Hengoed, crossing the open countryside of Eglwysilan common.  Giving good views into the Rhymney Valley, the Aber Valley, across to the Taff Vale, and the central Beacons, the trail followed some minor country lanes and public footpaths that follow the Rhymney Valley Ridgeway Walk.  On re-entering the country park, we walked along the length of ‘Sultan’ the pit pony, one of the UK’s largest figurative earth sculptures, and took in the views from the High Point Observatory, as Alan educated us about the history of the colliery and how the country park came about.  A lovely and varied walk on a beautiful day.
