Western Midlands walk around Codsall, 2nd September 2018

The second of September started out dull and grey as 24 people gathered outside the Codsall railway station ticket office, now a trendy bar and restaurant befitting the affluence of the area. We were pleased to welcome five new faces, three of them completely new to GOC. It was also notable that two of the participants were able to access the walk by train. As we set off the clouds began to disperse and the sun made an appearance, making the need for wet-weather gear less likely.

AOG Brown Clee

At 10.30 27 of us and a dog set off from the picnic area aside Brown Clee hill near to the village of Cleobury North a few miles west of Brignorth. After the long and hot weather there was a forecast of possible showers during the day with rain definitely by the afternoon. Whilst no one really wanted to be climbing hills in temperatures of late 20’s neither did we want to get rain and windswept in open hillside. After a gentle gradient climb amongst pastures used by sheep we were able to see across to the Wrekin landmark to the west of Telford where we had come from and make out the location of the Ironbridge Gorge....

AOG Quiz Sunday 29th July

As this year's compere of the traditional Sunday evening quiz it was probably best that I didn’t return from leading a 12 mile walk during the day until about 5.45 in the afternoon. Less time alone in my room to contemplate the task ahead was probably an advantage!

As an AOG first timer I was conscious of following in the worthy footsteps of past quiz setter and host Peter Blackburn and did not really know what to expect. Peter’s guidance beforehand about structuring the quiz was most welcome.

AOG Walk Sunday 29th July - Bridgnorth & The River Severn

With the rain coming down as threatened before the start the original contingent of 18 booked for this walk had been depleted to 10 at the start point. However the brave ones were rewarded as the steady drizzle had all but ended within about half an hour after setting off, and the weather was positively balmy from late morning onwards.
