December NONE Christmas Social

7 Jan 2019 | Western Midlands Group

On Saturday 29th December, members from the Western Midlands were joined by friends from the South Midlands, Cheshire and Stoke making a group of 15 for a non-Christmas social at the Pepper Chef Chinese Restaurant. The Pepper Chef stands on the border between Birmingham's Chinese and gay quarters and did us proud with their range of traditional delicacies. There were many Chinese people eating in the restaurant which was a good sign of the quality and value to come. On offer were Chicken Feet, Ox Aorta and Pigs' Intestines - an offer that none of the GOCers present were brave enough to take up....

Atherstone New Year’s Day Walk

3 Jan 2019 | Western Midlands Group

When Chris Thomas arrived in the sleepy market town of Atherstone he was expecting a good turn out from his group. Imagine his surprise and delight when he entered the market square to be greeted by 20 GOCers from around the country including 3 Group Coordinators and a dog. It transpired that the local hunt was the target of the protest not GOC members and we were able to exit the square safely before the hunt arrived....

Hereford 'A Personal Tour'.

7 Nov 2018 | Western Midlands Group

From outside the city we retraced the steps I took walking home from school, past my junior school and through parks and fields that buffer the city. With references to the Civil War, railway history as well as some more personal memories. Through the Castle Green, and to the cathedral for lunch and a small tour of this beautiful building. Onwards through High Town, I was happy to show the very much neglected, and little known canal that once made its way over from Gloucester....

Bacchanalian delights in Birmingham

28 Oct 2018 | Western Midlands Group

On Saturday 27th October 13 Western Midlands members enjoyed all the Bacchanalian delights that Birmingham could offer. We were joined by members from as far afield as Cheltenham, Southam and Ludlow in the lively surroundings of the Bacchus Bar in the Burlington Arcade just off New Street. The style of food on offer was good quality pub grub, for example Steak and Ale Pie, Hunter’s Chicken and Fish and Chips with Profiteroles or Lemon tart for dessert amongst other things. We had the sole use of our own dining room and received excellent service from our waitress, Fiona, who coped calmly with all the demands we threw at her....
