Our brave band of 15 commenced the ten mile stroll with a climb up the iron age mound of Stephens Castle with its far reaching views towards Corfe Castle and the Purbeck Hills. A tramp through the forest of tall pines led us onto the moor to cross the old railway at Cow Bridge.
After a coffee break at Cripplestyle ruins we enjoyed the rolling countryside of Jordan Hill to reach the Sixpenny Handley Brewery located on a remote farm just in time for our picnic and a delicious selection of ales.
Descending into picturesque Cranborne village we crossed the River Crane and ascended to explore the motte and bailey of Cranborne Castle. Our return followed the course of the river in often muddy terrain through sheep fields guarded by alpaca to pass a heavy horse centre and pretty lilly ponds
