Dorset Group 19Sep19: Stoborough Heath and Hartland Moor

On a warm sunny day with clear blue skies and little or no breeze our merry band of 8 assembled at Sunnyside Farm to commence our exploration of remote Stoborough Heath. We began at the new wetland viewing area where Derek, our fungus expert, discovered two enormous puffball mushrooms which he promptly picked to share with the group to eat later.

More mushroom foraging ensued as we traversed the heath and entered Hartland Moor. Here a coffee break at a hedgerow laden with blackberries and sloes allowed further harvesting. The trek across the moor yielded far reaching views over to distant Corfe Castle before we entered wooded farmland where wild deer played happily with horses.

Following a welcome pint and lunch at the appropriately named Halfway Inn, where we were joined by a further member, we completed our walk by returning along the old clayworks tramway pausing enroute at the hide to view birds and goats on the heath.
